The Potosi Trojan Marching Band performs best scoring show in finals at Sullivan.

On September 25, the Potosi Trojan Marching Band attended their second band competition of the year in Sullivan, Missouri. They competed against three other schools in their class for parade and two in their division for field. They were in the top eight scores of the day qualified to compete in finals against eight other schools. Potosi earned Outstanding Percussion and second place in the Blue Division for parade with a score of 80.1, behind St. Clair with a score of 80.2. Being defeated by a tenth of a point.

Potosi also won Outstanding Visual in field show and placed second in the White Division. After competing in finals, they outscored St. James, which had previously beat them in the White Division, bumping them to seventh place. Potosi was the only band to improve their scores from prelims to finals.

The Potosi Trojan Marching Band is performing a very difficult show this year titled, Orpheus in the Underworld. The theme of their show is the Greek mythology tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. This tale tells about the journey of Orpheus. After losing his wife to the god Hades, Orpheus travels to the underworld to try bring her back to Earth. Hades says that Orpheus may take his wife back but there is a catch.

The band is very young this year and holds a total of 80 students. This is Jordan Simms’ third year directing the Potosi Marching Band. The band is already starting the season with a good record. Many were worried about how the band would be able to do this season since last year was very difficult to compete due to Coronavirus. Especially with the mask mandate, and having to wear masks to school.

Matti Cook is a senior in high school this year, and is also the entire low brass and woodwind section leader. Cook said, “It’s a lot of work and we have a lot of potential with the show. I think things are going to work out.”
