In a male dominated sport, a remarkable shift is happening as more girls step onto the mats. Potosi High School is seeing more interest in girls wrestling than ever.
Coach Michael Huddleston is thrilled to see the team grow this year, he’s expecting at least seven girls. Not only will he have strong senior leaders like Alli Missey and Harley Vance this year, but we will also have incoming freshman who are ready to learn and put in the work on the mats. “Girls wrestling is a change for everyone, but I think that it’s a change for the better.” He also mentioned that he thinks that this could be the year that we win a tournament for the first time in history.
Entering a male dominated sport can be intimidating, so I asked coach Huddleston what he would tell girls who are interested but nervous to join. ““The best thing to do is come to the room and figure it out. If you like it then that’s great. Come stick it out and if not we won’t hold it against you but you won’t know unless you try it.”
There will be a meeting on Friday, October 6 to discuss the upcoming season. Feel free to join if you’re interested.
