On Friday, March 1, a groundbreaking was held for the new amphitheater coming to Washington County behind Reeds Relics. The Potosi Trojans band and choir attended the groundbreaking and performed.
County Clerk Jenny Allen came up with the idea for the amphitheater after the county bought the vacant lot behind Reeds Relics eight years ago. Her vision was to bring families together and give people a place to socialize in the town of Potosi. With the help of McCaul McCaul and Associates, the idea for the amphitheater was brought to life. Some uses of the amphitheater will be for art exhibits, by organizations as a place for an event, by the school for performances, and just as a place for people to get together.
Allen said, “We think it’ll bring people together and help the businesses in downtown. It’s just a place for people to come and enjoy the beautiful scenery that’s right here in town and close to everything else we have to offer.”
The city applied for a $500,000 grant which was approved about a year ago and provided the city with about $250,000 in grant funds. This meant the city had to raise the other $250,000. With the help of fundraisers, local businesses, and organizations, they raised the money needed to start the project, and the construction of the amphitheater is expected to begin soon.
Allen said it is expected to be a 9-12 month project, and the hope is to be able to use the amphitheater next summer.
