Potosi FFA chapter recently went to Wurdack Research farm and attended Wurdack Education Day in Cook Station Missouri. While at Wurdack FFA members learned about seasonal and annual grasses, implanting hormones into cattle, wild hog management, common area mammals and how they are good or bad for our environment, pasture management. Members also got to learn from Steelville FFA on their program and how their Ag on the move program works.
Wurdack is a great experience for all students, whether they are going into a job in Agriculture or not. The skills learned at Wurdack are life skills that can be used in their own lives. However, this day was beneficial to students going into the agriculture field because it gave students a hands-on experience where they could learn about the jobs in their desired field.
One of those hands-on experiences was the cannulated heifer, a heifer surgically fitted with a cannula that allows access to her rumen to perform research on how the cow’s digestive system works. This station was a favorite of the group because most FFA members can relate to and better understand their livestock’s digestive system at home.
Wurdack Education Day is a day for all FFA members to come and learn about the Agriculture field on a deeper level and get insight from professionals. Potosi FFA chapter hopes to keep attending Wurdack Education Day to continue learning life skills and gain skills for the future.
