PHS varsity volleyball team was named the Class Three State Champions for the first time in program history. The girls’ unstoppable record led to their victory. The volleyball team has made history by becoming District champions as they played Ste. Genevieve. Then making it past Sectionals as they played Cape Notre Dame as well as making it past the Quarter Finals against Notre Dame St. Louis to be placed in the Final Four.
On Thursday, November 7, the girls faced Odessa for the Semi-finals of the Final Four that were held in Cape Girardeau at the Show Me Center. The girls beat Odessa in three sets. The set scores are 25-21, 25-23, 25-23. The volleyball team advanced to play for the championship on Friday, November 9. It was announced that Potosi would go against Logan-Rogersville for the Class Three Missouri State title. The game would end in a heart-racing three sets. The scores of those sets were 25-19, 25-21, 25-20. This is the first time since the 2013 boys cross country team, that Potosi would bring home a state title. This state title is the first time for our volleyball team to become state champions.
Senior, Ava Robart said, “It was amazing, being a senior and getting to experience something that I’ve worked so hard for since freshman year. Coming into this year I’ve had to face a lot of adversity with injury and when I got hurt I thought I was done. So getting to come back and playing like myself at state was something that can’t be topped. It is such a bittersweet feeling as a senior. It doesn’t feel like it’s over just because it was such a happy ending. So it’s a feeling that I will never forget knowing that I was able to leave PHS with a legacy.”
Sophomore, Macyn Mccarthy said, “The feeling of being state champions will never be topped. It was such a surreal moment, and being the first-ever girl’s team in Potosi High School to win a State title is such an accomplishment. I would have never thought this would happen in my life, but I’m so blessed for the opportunity and support from the community that our team received.”
Freshman, Eve Litton said, “It was a very unexpected outcome for me as a freshman going the furthest we could in our volleyball season and finishing with a win is something that I will never forget. I will always have that experience with the people I became so close with. We had the best support from our coaches, community, parents, and fellow students and I couldn’t be more grateful for getting this opportunity. It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I believe every one of us deserved this huge win and I am so proud of everyone. I am truly blessed to be a part of this team and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next three years.”
These girls made history for our little town! Congratulations, ladies and coaches.
