The students at Potosi High take on the role of Santa in their composition class. Mrs. Kay took it upon herself to host an event, where kids write letters to Santa. In these letters, the kids write things they want from Santa and how good they have been this year. This event is for all ages and brings so much joy to the kids. Mrs. Kay’s yearbook class also decided to buy presents for kids, whose parents didn’t know how many gifts they would be able to receive this year.
Kay said, “Three years ago, my friends and I started the Christmas market in Bonne Terre, MO. We decided that one of the activities we were going to offer for kids would be writing letters to Santa, and we wanted to return these letters. So I thought it would be a good activity for my high school students to do and also some good community service. We also got the idea to buy children presents when one of my students took it upon themselves to buy a child presents whose family didn’t know how much they could afford. Ever since then, my yearbook class has bought presents for kids whose families weren’t sure how much they could afford.”
There were 75 letters written for Santa this year, and the students of Mrs.Kay’s composition classes worked hard to complete each letter thoughtfully and uniquely. Also, Mrs. Kay’s yearbook class bought 11 kids presents this year.
Senior Kaitlin Lester said, “My favorite thing is getting to read the letters and gift ideas from the kids. Then writing them back so the kids experience some Christmas magic and joy.”
Mrs. Kay’s classes will continue this tradition every Christmas, in hopes of spreading more Christmas cheer.
