On Monday, December 16, 2024, the Potosi High School girls basketball teams played Bismarck High School at PHS. Junior varsity played a head to head game against the Lady Indians, falling short with a final score of 29-23. The varsity followed, playing a great game against this team coming forward with a final score of 73-45 taking another victory.
Starting off the night of the two quarter game, the five PHS junior varsity starters: Sophomore- Corinne Ainley, Adalyn Kirby, Hallie Payne; Freshman- Sabyn Brown, and Mia Kley took the court for tip-off. As the ball was thrown up into the arm for both teams during tip-off the game began.
As the first quarter began, the Bismarck Indians were the first to put points on the scoreboard, shortly after the Lady Trojans are on the scoreboard as well. As both teams ran the court with pass after pass and shot after shot, at the end of first quarter both teams were tied with a score of 15-15.
Sophomore Adalyn Kirby said, “I felt like we were working well together as a team, especially after not playing for two weeks. I was positive about the first quarter being that we had good communication and teamwork.”
As the ball is thrown in by the Lady Trojans in the second quarter, the quarter begins with the Indians putting two more points up on the board however the Trojans shortly after tie the game back up. As the hustle continued, the Indians were then ahead of the Trojans throughout the whole quarter. Ending the game with a loss for the junior high Lady Trojans putting their season record at one win and one loss.
Sophomore Corinne Ainley said, “ I feel like we could have played better but it has been two weeks since we had, I think we did pretty good.”
After the J.V. game, varsity is up next for a full game against the Lady Indians. The five PHS varsity starters: Sabra Brown, Aubree Wilson, Chloe Rowe, Presley Smith, and Aniston Mapes were ready to run the court again after a great win against West Country.
As Bismarck wins the tip off the game is off to a fast start, with Rowe making a three pointer putting the first points on the scoreboard for the Lady Trojans. As the game continued at a fast pace for the rest of the quarter, with both teams making shots; the Lady Trojans took the lead with a score of 23-11 at the end of the quarter.
Quickly following, the Lady Indians were the first to put up points in the second quarter, with a quickly made three pointer. However the Lady Trojans retaliated with a made layup by P. Smith. The Lady Trojans then moved into half time with a leading score of 38-23.
Sophomore Robart said, “Going into half time I was feeling very confident about our ability to continue to work together and keep the lead. However, I was worried about the foul trouble that we were in and it having an affect on us as a team.”
As the third quarter began the Trojans were ready to win this quarter as well. As the ball is thrown in by the Lady Indians, the Trojans are quick to gain it back. As the ball travels down the court, the Indians make two free throw shots; however Wilson comes back with a three point shot at the left wing. Through shots being made the Lady Trojans take the win for the third quarter with a score of 60-35.
With this being the final quarter of the game the girls knew that they would have to communicate back and forth to earn the win. Putting up the first points of the fourth quarter was Sophomore Eden Robart with a box shot. With a final leading score of 73-45 the Lady Trojans took a glorious win against the Bismarck Indians.
Senior Mapes said, “I think the team as a whole did very well in the third and fourth quarter. We fought hard to the end of the game to win and the younger girls stepped up in the last couple of minutes of the game when they were put in.”
Although both teams played a great game Monday night. The PHS junior varsity girls did play a close game that ended in a loss, however the PHS varsity girls did end the game with another win putting their record at 10 and 0. The next game that these girls play is Friday, December 19, 2024 with the theme of “Clash of the Classes.”
