The PHS Girls’ Wrestling team traveled to Dexter High School on January 25, 2025, to compete in the SEMO Conference tournament. The Lady Trojans came home pinning lots of success with both Lauan Cantrell and Ava Williams as SEMO Conference Champions. Kenzie Wade placed 2nd as well as Kammara Tedder. Kaydence Vance, Jazimine Ramsey, and Jade Ramsey also played a crucial role in the teams’ success placing 4th individually. With a total of 198 points, the team placed 2nd overall. This was a huge accomplishment for them. There were many “wrestling schools” as Coach Ross said. They faced lots of tough competition. Still, the Lady Trojans didn’t let up, claiming their runner-up accomplishment.
Coach Ross said, “Wrestling is extremely difficult. We have long practices where we beat each other up until we bleed. Only to earn the opportunity to get a 6-minute go at our opponents. Not many come to watch, which I have never understood. We tackle with no pads, we throw our opponent’s feet over their heads while we plant them through the mat, and we control them to the point of no escape. It builds self-discipline that most high school kids will never get the opportunity to build. It’s the most exciting sport on the planet.”
Sophomore Conference Champion Lauana Cantrell also spoke on her and her team’s victory saying, “Our girls wrestled very hard and did amazing. I’m so proud of how close our girls have come to one another, these girls are so encouraging and I love getting to see each of them cheer for one another.”
Your last chance to catch the Lady Trojans at home is tomorrow evening January 30th, 2025 vs. St. Pius. They will travel to Lift for Life Academy on February 6th and 7th. Then their post-season begins with the District Tournament on February 14.
