On October 25, 2024, during the last football game of the season, sophomore Carter Pyatt got injured in a tackle. After being transported to the hospital, he found out he broke his leg and had to have surgery.
After months of recovery and watching his teammates practice for the upcoming wrestling season, Carter was finally able to begin practicing with them. Through the regular season, he had his ups and downs. He won some, and he lost some. Between regular season meets and conferences, he was able to find his way again.
When state approached, Carter started winning. After his wins at districts, Carter qualified for state and then traveled to the University of Missouri to compete, where he won the majority of his matches.
Head wrestling coach, Coach Ross, said, “Going into the state tournament was even more intense than I anticipated. We competed with approximately 60 schools. Being in the tunnels before and after the matches is a wild place. Kids experience the highest highs and lowest of lows. It was an intensely emotional experience.”
Carter got to the tournament and won his first match. When his second match came around, he took a loss. However, his next two came up, and he found the drive to win them. Even though he lost the following match, he was able to succeed when it mattered most. In his last match of the tournament, Carter finished strong and came out ahead. Although it’s only his second year on the high school wrestling team, Carter walked away 5th at the state wrestling tournament in the class 2, 157 weight class.
Carter said, “ I was so happy to win the blood round because I knew that once I won, then I was going to medal at state regardless, so winning that round was a big accomplishment for me.”
Carter is one of three students in Potosi wrestling history to receive a medal at state. Despite his major injury, Carter put in the hard work, practice, and dedication to finish his season by placing at state.
