On Thursday, March 6 the Potosi one-act play and readers theatre teams competed at districts. Both teams began practicing at the beginning of the school year in August and have spent all year perfecting their pieces.
The competition piece chosen for one-act play was “Fire Exit.” This show follows multiple characters who were involved in a high school fire which resulted in the death of a student. This is a show that focuses heavily on the grief and guilt that follows this disaster. Five schools competed in the MSHSAA one-act play competition and two shows advanced to state. Potosi placed second overall and will be advancing to the state competition on April 23 in Springfield, Missouri.
Readers theatre performed a piece called “I Don’t Want to Talk About it.” The piece hits on multiple different teen issues and highlights the things that teenagers don’t, won’t, and can’t talk about. The piece climaxes with a students suicide, leading to an important message about the importance of talking about teen issues. We are incredibly proud of our readers theatre. They placed third out of seven schools and were just shy of qualifying for the state competition.
This will be Potosi’s third year competing in one-act and readers theatre competition and this will be Potosi’s first time ever advancing to state in theatre. Senior Magnum McCormack has competed in the one-act play for the past three years. When asked how he felt about finally advancing to state he said, “It’s great to see all of our hard work pay off. Mr. Dement has been working so hard for the past three years to get us there and I know that’s very rewarding for him as well.”
Freshman Hunter Moorman received a leading role in the show as the only freshman cast in the production. When asked how he felt regarding his experience with the show he stated, “One-act is one of the first places I’ve really been able to feel like myself. I’ve been surrounded by people who make me feel like I’m truly supposed to be here.”
We are anxious to see how our one-act does at state this year and we are excited to see this program flourish in the future. Theatre director, Donald Dement, has announced that the one-act production next school year will be “From the Case Files of Tessa Hound, Amateur Junior High Detective” by Donald Moss and auditions for the show have already begun. Good luck to our one-act team at the state competition!
