The Potosi Trojan Varsity Football team is expecting big things as they welcome a new addition, coach Mark Casey this season. The PHS football team has been working tirelessly since the beginning of preseason and are still continuing to work hard every day in practice. The varsity football team implemented new off season practices to ensure improvements from last season in hopes that all the hard work they put in will result in a district title and hopefully making a memorable run.
On Aug. 29, 2025, the PHS football team travelled to St. Clair to face the Bulldogs. They fell just short of the victory, losing 35-21. Quarterback David Miller in the first game of his Sophomore campaign threw for 162 yards going 14/19 with one interception. Miller said, “In order to be successful this season, it’s going to take a lot of discipline, brotherhood, and we are all going to have to be coachable, which is something each and everyone of us can always improve on.” Miller hopes to keep his team motivated the rest of the season as their starting QB and said, “We are all going to make mistakes because nobody is perfect. As their quarterback I try my best to keep everyone in good spirits because that’s the only way we will ever be able to get things done.”
Coach Mark Casey returns to PHS this year to his alma mater where he has previously coached football before. He was again added as a new addition to the PHS football coaching staff for the 2025 season. Coach Mark Casey said, “I want us to get better each week and I want us to improve on the little things. I think if we continue to improve we will be rolling on all cylinders by the end of the season and hopefully be able to compete for a district championship.” When asked about how it was returning to his alma mater Casey said “It’s good. It’s really good. It’s kinda different from when I left last time because I came back not really knowing who my players were. It’s like starting over and starting fresh and I’m really excited about it.”
Last year, the PHS football team graduated a handful of starting seniors and are expecting the rest of the team to step up and do their jobs to the best of their ability. This year, a talented senior class is returning multiple starters including Thomas Lambing, Jude Litton, Cole Fowler, Cole Juliette, Noah Walton, Clayton Richards, and Wyatt Cannon. Along with the senior class, this year’s team plans to use the talent of juniors Karsen Boyer, Carter Pyatt, Blayne Maxwell, Elliot Akers, Justin Reynolds, and Emmitt Maxwell to help them achieve their goals.
Senior starter and captain Cole Fowler said, “It’s always important to give your best at all times whether it be for you, your teammates, your coach, or your school. I believe that whatever you’re doing, give it your best because you only get to do a lot of things once. At some point in your life you’re going to have to look back and ask yourself if you did the best you could at this or that. It’s better knowing you gave it your all then having to regret it later on and not being able to go back and change it.”
Fowler also said he believes that the team needs to “stay hungry and refuse to be satisfied. Everyone is going to have to do their job if they want to keep playing football the upcoming Friday night.”
Coach Casey said, “By us giving our one hundred percent best effort will prepare us enough to where the effort can take over and it will show through our performance and earn us some wins.” With the talent at hand, the Trojans are expecting big goals and accomplishments this year.
On Sept. 5, 2025, the PHS football team travelled to Charleston and faced the opposing Charleston Blue Jays and defeated them 39-8. Senior captain Jude Litton helped the team to a win racking up six tackles on defense.
Jude said, “If we want to achieve and meet our expectations, we are going to have to lock in but have fun. It’s a game. You have to be able to have fun and simply do it all for the love of the game.”
Senior captains, and starters Jude Litton and Cole Fowler hope for the best this season but hope to leave a lasting mark on PHS football. Litton said, “If I could leave one piece of advice behind to my underclassmen brothers I would tell them to trust the process. Stuff is not going to go your way and a lot of things are going to happen that you never thought would. Always push through and trust those around you because they are going to make sure everything goes the way it is supposed to.”
Fowler added to that by saying “Never take those Friday nights for granted. Nothing again will ever come close to going out on a Friday night, with your brothers you’ve grown up with since you can remember, and playing in front of your whole hometown.”
