The Potosi Trojan Marching Band’s new uniforms have officially been ordered! The design was finalized by the students at the beginning of Aug., and they should be delivered by the end of Dec.
Their current uniforms are noticeably old. They have been in use since the beginning of 2007, which makes them older than most students in this year’s senior class. They have a smell that no amount of dry cleaning has been able to fix, are stained and tattered, and their zippers and clips are held together by safety pins and last-minute sewing.
They’re able to have the privilege of ordering the new uniforms thanks to our community’s support of Proposition C.A.R.E. The PHS Head Band Director, Mr. Simms, says, “I am extremely excited to get new uniforms; the current uniforms have served their purpose, but it is time for my band to look as good as they sound.”
Similarly, junior alto player Kaylea Dobbs said, “We travel to multiple parades and field competitions every year. When we’re standing next to schools that have brand-new uniforms, it stands out that first impressions really matter. I think these will finally help us represent Potosi with the same amount of pride and professionalism that we put into our music and marching.”
There were a lot of changes made in the actual design as well. Additions not on the current uniforms include gauntlets (the wrist wraps), a hip cape, gold accents across the chest, a more vibrant purple, and a hidden “P” right on the front. The new uniforms also honor the old ones by being made of the same type of fabric and featuring the same kind of zipper and clip—just more durable.
Beyond appearances, these new uniforms are expected to boost student morale and attract new members to the band. “When you’re proud of what you’re wearing, it changes the energy on the field,” said senior trumpet player Jaiden Jackson. “I think more kids will want to be a part of something that looks this good, and I’m so excited to come back next year and see the band in all their well-deserved glory.”
This season will officially be the last featuring the old uniforms. If you want to support the band, you can catch them at all home football games on Sept. 19, Oct. 3, and Oct. 10. Their competitions include Sept. 13 (Murphysboro), Sept. 20 (Sullivan), Sept. 27 (DeSoto), Oct. 11 (Bi-State Marching Invitational, Home), Oct. 18 (Rebel Invitational, Central), and Oct. 25 (Pinckneyville Mardi Gras).
