Many Potosi High School students gather weekly at First Baptist Church of Potosi on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m for what is called “C.O.W.”
C.O.W is a light-hearted abbreviation for Church On Wednesdays. This youth group has been a part of the Potosi community for many decades. These students have impacted the community positively in many ways. For example, one week every summer members clean up the older church members’ yards, baking cookies for the local police station, writing encouraging messages in chalk on the sidewalks in town, and many other activities.
PHS sophomore athlete Chloe Lambing and C.O.W member said, “ Personally, my favorite memory is the peep fight.” The peep fight is when each youth member buys multiple packs of peeps the week after Easter when they are on sale and launch them at each other in the church parking lot.
Lambing continued, “The youth group has taught me about God, and about the people around me. It also helped me grow close to people around me I probably wouldn’t know without it.”
Former member of the youth group and PHS teacher, Melissa Silvey, said, “When I was a member, it was called the Agape youth group but it actually started back in the 1970s which is when my dad was a part of it.” Silvey continued, “The original intent of the youth group was to give teenagers a place to find Jesus without the seriousness that Sunday church might bring.”
The Youth leader Kevin Smith said, “C.O.W exposes you to the gospel of Jesus and we here at this church believe is the number one thing that you can look for in life, is finding your path in Jesus.”
C.O.W is every Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Potosi from 6:30 p.m to 8 p.m.
