On Friday Sept. 26, 2025, Coach Mark Casey was appointed Winningest Coach in Potosi High School football history. On the 26, the Trojans beat the Blackcats of Fredericktown 48-15, earning Casey his 56th win and giving him this special title.
When asked about the experience, Casey said, “It’s pretty cool. I never got into coaching for this title but it is a really cool bonus.”
Casey also had a very successful run when he moved to Potosi High School’s rival school, Central High School in 2016. At the end of the 2023 season, the Rebels earned a first place state title under Casey. He stayed at Central until the 2024 season was over.
Casey was rehired here at PHS as varsity football coach in Apr. 2025. He is a familiar face at Potosi High School since he played football here and graduated from here. He also coached here from 2004 to 2016. When asked about how football now is different from when he was in high school, he said, “It’s very different. There have been a lot of rule changes put in for safety. I think the way training and lifting weights has also changed a lot. Technology has changed the game a lot as well with sideline and endzone instant replay on the sidelines during games. There are many changes over the years but at the end of the day, the basics of the field are still very similar.”
He says that there are certain attributes that a good coach has to have in order to achieve something like this. Casey said, “Being able to do it for a long period of time and having really good players and assistant coaches helps out tremendously.”
Sophomore varsity quarterback David Miller is a big fan of the way Casey coaches. Miller said, “I feel like Coach Casey is very deserving of this superior title with everything he has put into our football program here at PHS.”
Casey has put tons of effort forth to achieve what he has and to get to where he is now. PHS Principal Mr. Mothersbaugh thinks very highly of Casey. Mothersbaugh said, “Mark Casey puts in so much time and effort to lead our students, not just football players. He understands football and how to teach it, but he leads our players down the road of life… he teaches them respect, responsibility, trust, and teamwork. The skills he teaches will make a lasting impact in the life of our students. Thank you coach! We appreciate you for what you do on the field, in the classroom, and the life lessons that you teach. Congratulations!”
