At Potosi High School over 500 students walk the halls every day, but there is one who walks the halls not sure where his next step is going to be. Sophomore Zayden Brown perseveres through a challenge that very few people notice. Every step is an act of courage, a quiet reminder that strength often comes in forms we can’t see.
Zayden was born blind, not given the opportunity to ever truly see something. Zayden was just one when he had the first surgery. Dad Ziggy said, “His mother and I noticed the day he was born that his eyes looked different. It wasn’t until he was one that he was able to have the first surgery.”
Despite the challenges Brown faces, they have never prevented him from doing the activities he loves most. Whether it’s playing video games with his cousins or exploring the endless possibilities of technology. Brown’s determination shines through. One of the classes Brown is taking is Web Design, a course that requires students to master coding and problem solving within a digital environment. Brown has excelled, proving his ability to thrive in places where others might hesitate.
Mrs. Matthews, Zayden’s Web Design teacher, has witnessed his determination firsthand. “He demonstrates remarkable resilience,” she said, describing the way Zayden tackles coding projects without hesitation even when the assignments push him outside of his comfort zone. Watching him work alongside his peers, you would never guess the challenges he faces. Mrs. Matthews added, “His ability to seemingly integrate is a true testament to his strength and perseverance.”
Brown has undergone multiple surgeries in the hope of restoring some of his vision, but by the age of 14 none have been successful. Instead, he has learned to rely on structure and routine as a means of navigating the world around him. At night or in dark spaces, he must remain constantly aware of his environment, using his hands to feel for obstacles that might block his path. Within school, Zayden has developed a precise walking routine to move safely through crowded hallways, something even leaving class early in middle school to avoid the rush of students. These adaptations, though challenging, highlight his resilience and determination to remain independent.
“From the beginning it has been a learning experience. Growing up for him has been challenging in ways with his mobile skills, like learning and remembering the layout of the house. Nowadays it’s more of how I can learn from him.” Said Ziggy.
Zayden said, “Other than my resources classes, web design and 3d printing have got to be my favorite classes.” In web design coding and working behind the scenes of websites are somethings Zayden enjoys to do. 3D printing is a class he picked knowing it was going to be a challenge, but it was pushing him beyond the limits he has for himself, stepping outside of the comfort zone.
His vision teacher Ms. Furlow has been his biggest supporter. Zayden said, “She gets me all the technology and resources I need to continue my education.”
Cousin Sabyn Brown has a lot of good things to say about her cousin. Growing up with Zayden is something she wouldn’t change for the world, often thanking God for the relationship and ability to know Zayden. “ I admire his work ethic, he takes on any challenge, and stands out as a go-getter,” said Sabyn. She knows that Zayden is going to be successful throughout his life. Sabyn said, “ He inspires me to face every challenge with a mindset that I can do it.” She wants people to know that although Zayden faces challenges and struggles on a daily basis, he is still human, and is no different from anyone else.
3D Printing teacher Mr. Fulton reflected on having Zayden as a freshman, emphasizing that he never let challenges stand in his way. “ I had him for video and design, and he was able to successfully create multiple video games.” Fulton said, “His determination and creativity really stood out, and I think he’ll carry those same qualities into 3D printing this year.”
“I am proud of Zayden every day. He faces challenges on a daily basis. That would break others. He never complains and never asks ‘Why Me?’” said Grandma.
Throughout high school, Zayden has stood out to his teachers, friends, and family, not because of his challenges, but because of the way he rises above them. Despite obstacles that many might never notice, he consistently treats others with the same respect and kindness he hopes to receive in return. When asked to describe him in three words, the response was clear, brave, determined and loyal. His grandmother added, “Zayden inspires me to treat everyone with compassion, kindness and respect.” For those who walk beside him, Zayden is more than an inspiration, he is a living lesson in resilience, compassion, and hope.
