The Trojans Men’s basketball team tried to take a win on Thursday, March 3 by winning the District Championship in Ste. Genevieve. The last time the team won the District Championship game was 7 years ago, 2015. The boys were 15-11 coming into the game but lost 74-52.

By the end of the first quarter, the score was 16-10 Central. Both teams had struggled to hit their shots and free throws.

The score at the end of the first half was 28-20 with Central setting the lead.

Third quarter rolled around with both teams fired up and ready to win the game. Freshman, Carter Whitley, tied the game 28-28 with a lay up causing Central’s Coach, Brad Gross, to call a 30-second timeout with over five minutes left in the quarter, reworking the plays with his team. Potosi’s pep squad was louder than ever, but the ending score at the end of the third quarter was 43-32 Central.

In the fourth quarter, the game was head to head. Both teams shot several two-pointers and free throws left and right. PHS’s team ended the quarter with fifteen points and five made free throws while CHS’ team ended with twenty points and eleven made free throws. The final score does not reflect the quality of play in the second half. Many late free throws at the end of the game gave Central the eighteen point win.

Head Coach, Jackson Conaway, said “I am extremely proud of the team for their hard work in the District Championship and throughout the season. I’m excited to have nine of the players return and hopes to have another successful season next year.”

Sophomore, Gabe Brawley was named All-District after the game.

Brawley says, “I was grateful to be awarded making the All-District team, but I think there are people that deserved it just as me. A quote I have always lived by is ‘You have to suffer to succeed.’ I cannot wait until next season to see what the team has to bring.”
