This Thanksgiving season, we’ll be giving thanks to many things about our lives. One thing many will be doing is eating with their families. A large part of said feast is the massive amounts of food. That food that can cause a long lethargy, known as a Food Coma. Yes, it’s a real thing, not just something people say when Uncle Jerry has a little too much turkey.
How you can prevent food comas (According to healthline.com):
- Keep Your Portions Moderate: If you overstuff yourself, you may feel more drowsy and feel the need to lie down. So watch those second servings, folks!
- Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can lead to impaired mental functioning and additional tiredness, so be sure to drink lots of water this Thanksgiving. A few bottles of water a day keeps sleep (and kidney stones) away!
- Get Good Sleep: If you were up since 4:00 A.M. preparing the stuffing and cranberry sauce, you’ll be packing another level of lethargy on top of the food coma. So be sure to get a good night’s rest before the big feast.
- Take a Nap: Ironically enough, a short nap after a big meal can reduce drowsiness upon waking up. So instead of trying to fight off the food coma, relieving yourself to your couch can be helpful! A good 30 minute lie down should be enough for you to get right back to the football game.
Now that you have a base idea of how to fight off food comas, be sure to make a mean pumpkin pie with the additional time. Uncle Jerry will certainly appreciate it since he’s hopefully no longer sleeping at dinner. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
