The Competitive Theatre Productions class headed to the One Act District competition on Thursday March 5, 2026. The competition was held at East Central College and they were the last school to perform for the one act category. The class has been working extremely hard on the show that they brought to competition.
The play the class brought was called “The Actors Nightmare” by Christopher Durang. The show is a comedy revolving around George who is mistaken for an understudy and is forced to perform bits and pieces from certain plays like “Private lives” by Noel Coward, “Hamlet,” as well as a few other pieces.
Previously the class was to perform the one act, “Aunt Leaf”, however with the snow days and how complex the show is, it put Mr. Dement and all of the students into a realistic reflection resulting in the changing of the shows.
Hunter Moorman has had the challenge of being Shakespearean. When asked how he has been doing with this he said, “My Shakespearean is the craziest I’ve ever had to act on stage. It’s so much fun but also challenging and I’m glad to be growing from it. I can confidently say it’s made me a bigger and better actor.”
Karlee Jacobs has had many challenges when it comes to playing her character, the stage manager, Meg. When she was asked to explain on these challenges she said, “I basically have three levels for Meg, she’s got the ‘I need you to stop acting dumb and get out of my way,’ the ‘I’ve been forced on stage and I have no acting experience,’ and the ‘Maybe I can be good at this.’ Which is basically toward the end after she’s forced to act. Being stern but only a little angry at the same time has been such a challenge, finding that middle took literally MONTHS! However, eventually I got there.”
At East Central College the play placed 1st making them district champs resulting in the cast and crew heading to the state competition held in Springfield, MO. The state competition will be held on April 22 and 23. Sixteen schools advance to state. Eight of the sixteen perform in one building and the rest in another. The top two from each building then advance to the finals round which is held on April 23. We wish the one act play team the best of luck at the state competition and no matter what happens they have put so much effort into their season.
