On Tuesday, December 10, 2024 the Potosi High School girls varsity basketball team played West County and beat them with a final score of 63 to 33.
The PHS girls varsity basketball team includes: Seniors- Aniston Mapes, Aubree Wilson, Ava Wright, and Kaydence Allgier; Junior- Caity Cain; Sophomores- Adalyn Kirby, Corinne Ainley, Sabra Brown, Eden Robart, and Hallie Payne; Freshmen- Chloe Rowe, Presley Smith, Brenley Thornton, and Sabyn Brown.
As these girls are playing this game after a fast start of just winning the championship at the Desoto basketball tournament. These girls were pumped up before the game even started, as they ran onto the court you can see the excitement on their faces.
As the game begins, Robart, in the first quarter at six minutes and ten seconds went up for a shot and took a foul which ended up with her being able to shoot two free throws and making the one, and putting the first point on the scoreboard for the Lady Trojans at a score of one to four.
As both teams take the court, the coach of the Potosi Trojans, Josh Mapes calls a timeout so he can talk to his girls and allow them to listen to what they may need to do to be better. After the minute, both the teams head back onto the court. As these teams continued to run the court, making shot after shot, they ended the first quarter with a score of 19 to 9.
Sophomore Sabra Brown said, “I felt good after the first quarter but I knew the job was still not done. After the quarter I said to myself that we needed to win the second quarter and when we come out at halftime the score was 0-0. But it felt good knowing we were up and we just had to keep it up and win every quarter and finish the job.”
As the second quarter begins, West County throws the ball in and soon goes up for a shot with a steal by Robart, as point guard Mapes brings the ball down going up for a lay up, with a rebound by Robart making the first points for the second quarter. As Potosi and West County run their plays and hussle up and down the court, with many shots being made including free throws and layups to have a final score of 32 to 16 (Lady Trojans) at the end of second quarter.
As the girls come out to shoot during half time soon the third quarter arises. As both teams continue to play aggressively and run all over the court trying to win the game, the Lady Trojans come up on top in the third quarter at 51 to 29. Although these girls know they are winning they continue to have the drive, teamwork, and communication skills to play through the fourth quarter.
Senior Wilson “Winning the game Tuesday night felt awesome. We came in with one thing on our mind which was to win the game and we got the job done against a team who thought they were going to blow us out by 20. Everyone came in and did their part in winning each quarter of the game Tuesday night. I was so happy to win yet another game to bring our record to 5-0 for the season so far.
The varsity girls basketball team play Monday, December 16, 2024 against Bismark High School. Be there and show up in the correct theme “Frat”.
